I'm not giving my age, but I'm young enough to still be in school. I've been identified as gifted practically from the moment I set foot in day care, already able to read at age 3. Being "gifted" has been hard in some ways socially, especially when I skipped a grade in elementary school.

I've heard ridiculous things such as the gov spending $0.03 on accelerated education for every $100 they spend on Special Ed. I realize that Special Ed kids need help too - some of my friends are in Special Ed - but my district has NOTHING for the gifted children. Next year my parents are sending me to private school, but I'd like to know: is the public school system being fair?

I'm really bored sometimes. Everything - sports, language, math/sciences, arts - they all come easily to me. I'm very, very grateful for this, but don't I deserve a chance to hone my talents, too?

I'm interested in starting my own education consulting firm which specializes in assisting families who have children with special needs. I live in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia (on the eastern peninsula). I want to apply for grant money to help parents who can't afford such a service but I need to start with people who can and are willing and seeking adivice from an experienced special educator. Is there is a good market for such a business? Also, how much do people in similar fields charge? what do I need to consider?

My husband and I were at an IEP meeting for our son, who is 5 and will be going to all-day kindergarten in the fall--he requires speech and occupational therapy (he's a late-talker).

This school shrink says that his cognitive skills are really delayed, and I disagree. You're talking about someone who's only spent an hour with him, and someone he does not know very well at all, versus his parents, who are with him just about 24/7 and have seen that he has great problem-solving skills.

What is going on? I know my son is smart--it's just that he doesn't express it. Is this just a way for them to label him to get extra funding?

If I look about, I normally do from right to left; if a sign catches my eye and then I look about from left to right it feels odd.

My daughter is a phenomenal reader. If she were good in math I would steer her towards the sciences, specifically physics. I am at a loss for what to focus her on as a reader

I need to know any specific websites or information concerning Aspergsers. His teacher at school thinks he has some of the qualities of someone with Asperger's. I also need to know if it can be treated. Any and all information will be of great use to me as I try to figure all this out. Thanks in advance!

Is a teacher legally allowed to blurt out in front of the class that a student recieves special education services? Wouldn't that be considered a violation of the privacy act, because to me its no ones business whether a student recieves special education services.

That is, why do we invest so much more in mentally retartded children than in gifted children?

Of course I am all for investing resources in the education of mentally retarded children. I'm just wondering why our system is so unfair to those kids who are just as abnormal, but in the opposite direction.

What about those that have severe autism? The ones that cant speak at all, have random fits of rage, have seizures on a regular basis, etc? Why are we only seeing the autistic kids that can talk and play with others? Why dont the tv shows and books ever show or talk about the ones that cant do anything but grunt and groan all day long? Or the ones that that have to be physically restrained because they started ramming their head into the wall for no reason whatsoever? Its disheartening to see a 13 year old with the mind of a 2 year old and we see absolutely nothing in periodicals, videos, books, etc that gives us any help whatsoever. We cant even find a book on dealing with severely autistic males going through puberty. I rather doubt that they are shipped to Australia at the age of 11 so there has to be information somewhere. What gives?

11yr old son. Hates school. Having difficulties in math. Though he does go to school every day and says he tries his best. We had him tested for ADHD, and he is not hyper. Needed medication for focusing. Now, the school wants to put him in Special Ed. I am afraid that this will stay with him for the rest of his schooling years and follow him to college. He is smart in so many things. We have tried the tutoring, didn't help. He will leave homework in school and not do it, telling us he forgot it. Any advice??
Thanks!
