In the field of language, receptivity is the opposite of productivity. Productive language involves talking and writing. Receptive language, or receptivity, is related "to the skills of listening and reading."

Physiologically, receptivity can refer the ability of ones body to receive environmental stimuli and to process them effectively in the brain. Abnormalities with the sensory organs are referred to as disorders, such as visual or hearing disorders. Extreme sensory deprivation includes blindness and deafness. Even if the receptive organs, such as the eyes and ears function properly, the message may not be delivered correctly en route to the brain. Such conditions are referred to as processing disorders, such as visual or auditory processing disorders.

Psychological receptivity refers to ones mental state of mind, namely the ability and mode to be able to receive information and to thoroughly and effectively process it intellectually and emotionally.

In Psychology, receptivity refers to the level of absorption or responsiveness. For instance, if you are testing a hypothesis, the receptivity of the individuals you test means that you are measuring the absorption or responsiveness to your measurement. Ego receptivity is also important when doing things like hypnosis.
