I enrolled my daughter in a home school program, i like it but she's not too excited, i realize its not the same as school, she misses out on the interaction w/ other kids, but the educational material is very impressive for second grade. She takes to the assignments w/ no prob. She can still write to the other kids in her area and call them and go on trips and stuff but im wondering did i make the right call??

My six year old is way to advanced for the curriculum being taught in her first grade class. I want to look into homeschooling, but really have no idea where to start. There seem to be hundreds of websites that say they provide teaching tools and text books, but they look like people out for money from what I can tell so far. Which resources are the best, and which are scams? What else do I need to consider when undertaking this education choice?

Multi-part question:
Are most of the activities with other homeschoolers or are they community programs?
Did your children add to the number of activities as they got older?
Can you estimate the amount of time your children spent/spend with only you and immediate family at home?

My kids are still quite young and only my dd is currently involved in extra-curricular activities, although both kids participate in a variety of homeschooling activities--parties, pot-lucks, get-togethers, play dates, weekly park days, field trips once a month... I'd love to see the variety of activities and how age may be a factor in the type and amount.

Of course, if you are a homeschooled student, please let us know what sorts of things you do.

The recent question about why people homeschool had me with far more words than I felt I should express because what I did express already took up a lot of room.

What I felt as I was writing my answer was that school has a culture all its own. Each grade level is practically a culture all its own. They have their own dialect, their own clothes, their own music, behaviours, attitudes... And it's all just kids directing it all, influenced by the media and advertising and what they think everybody else is doing.

I don't want my children to grow up in that culture. Just as someone might move from a country to flee certain cultural aspects, or someone might move so their child can attend a school that doesn't have some cultural elements that their other school had, I choose to homeschool to not have my children raised in the school culture that is present here.
