Computers & Internet - 22 July 2006

Maybe I'm missing something, but everywhere I look online, I'll see a crazy picture (like of Cookie Monster flipping the bird or of a baby with an awful look on it's face) & across the picture, it says "OWNED"....I've missed something somewhere, cuz I NO clue what this means. Could someone please explain this to me? (Only serious answer please...only answer if you really know what I'm talking about & really know what it means) Thanx.

It seems that without Myspace and Yahoo Messenger, everyone seems to have gone into whiny panic mode. Have we become so dependant on these things that we can't function adequately without them?

How do you put an insert an image into an HTML text box? On my site:

http://badluck416.tripod.com/index.html

If you click on "role in the series", you'll see an image below the text box, but I can't get it to go inside of the text box. I've tried the whole thing within the box, but it won't work. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Yesterday it just randomly shut down and now I can't get it to start again. It just says boot disc failure, insert system disck and press enter. But when I tried to do that it wouldn't work. Also sometimes it makes this weird clicking sound. Thank you for your help!!!

12/05 we bought a Compaq Presario Pentium 4, on a salesman's advice. This is no gaming computer: several Jedi Knight games won't run well, nor will Oblivion even load, and tonight, Ice Age 2 quickly reaches a level where the creature is supposed to be traveling through an area that shows only a grey screen. I updated ActiveX after googling for ideas about the specific Ice Age problem. This did not fix the problem (we already had ActiveX 90c .)

What is wrong with/missing from the computer that it won't play these games? Age of Empire/Civ III run just fine on the computer, but not Age of Mythology, although maybe it's an expansion of that game that doesn't work.

Can we buy something to add to the computer to make these games play or would that almost be as expensive as getting new computers? If getting another one is best, what computer specs would you recommend for being able to just load Oblivion/Ice Age 2 and go? Macs? Only PCs?

I am considering building my next computer from componants purchased from Frys or maybe NewEgg.com...

I think I have the expertise to do so, but I have never actully done it before, at least from scratch.

I plan on something close to the following specifications:

3.0 GHZ Processor (Intel or AMD, I do not personally have a preference)
1GB of Ram
160G HDD
512MB Vid Card (Geforce or something else, Video Game heavy)

I do not need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, or any of that other stuff...

And I have roughly 500$ to $600 to spend.

My checklist would be:

Box
Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Hard Drive
Power Supply
Video Card
Network Card
Operating system (When does Vista come out?)
CDRW/DVD Drive
Interior cables to put is all together

Anything else I am missing?

My other option is of course to just buy from Dell or Gateway, but my problem is I can get what I want for about $600 but it looks like I would have to upgrade the video card as soon as it arrived.

it's because Tom sold Myspace to the Yahoo! corporation and yahoo! and myspace are both down so programmers can merge the websites. sorry to burst your bubble, myspace is no more.

Thank you for answering first of all. But since todayy I have been having a problem trying to get into the new 8.0 beta instant messenger. I sign in and it cancels on me. So I 'm not having problems getting into my yahoo mail. So I have no idea what's up with it. I usually just keep it up all the time, and I even shut down my computer thinking it might come back uup that way, but it didn't. I even put in a feedback through the 360 page, asking them what was up. I haven't heard anything back yet. Unless it's just something for today. I don't knnow. I'm stumped on this one. The last time I had a problem was with the 7.0 and I had norton's firewall up, once I got rid of that, I had no problem down loading it. So If some one that might have had the same problem, help me out, and tell me how you over came yours and if it came back on. Please let me know, and thank you who ever answers me back. The messenger servers are down for messenger, I 86'd my 6.0 thinking it was that damn upgrade force they do from time to time, and when i installed 7.5 it was a no-show, and of course going to Myspace, couldnt log in there either, so would it kill these guys to do us all a favor and post when they do upgrades insted of the usual "we got the tech crew workin on it error messages galor"?
