I was riding the metra train home late one night at 11:30. From the windows of the train I saw all the rails on the train tracks on fire. I questioned the conductor. He said it was normal. Why does this happen?

ok, if you are a child, aged 15, are on a virgin train, birmingham to manchester, have a suitcase and it's rush hour and there are no seats, is that a viable reason to ask the attendant to go into first class?? any other ways to blag your way into first class in a situation like this?

Do you need to be certified or have a special license to operate a train? Does it pay good, and how many hours do you get in 2 week. Also do most compaies have 3 shifts.

Some of the escalators on the London Underground seem incredible high (or deep, depending if you are going up or down).

I know the escalator on the Northern Line up to Euston mainline station is very long, but which are the six longest escalators on the London Underground and just how long are they?

in coach seating-what are the pros and cons of upper versus lower? Next question is, they require reservations, but are these trains actually filled up-or can I just show up at the train station and get a ticket-as in, reserve then and there? Or would that adversely effect my fare? My sense is that there would always be room on the trains as train travel in the U.S. isn't what it is in Europe (wish it was, then there'd be lots of trains available!)

I am wondering because I was considering working for CSX and I wasn't sure about the future of railroads and whether or not I would still have a job and be able to retire after a number of years or if we wouldn't need railroads anymore in the near future.

This refers to TOC's selling tickets on train at MORE THAN the standard fare. (e.g. for 1 station - Ticket office 95pence but on train £1.50)

Thank you for responses anyway.
