My previous employer never took Federal out. On my W-2's every year it was never listed and I always owed the government. Is that legal? Could it be that it was because there were a lot of illegal immigrants working there too?

I live in Indiana. We have some messed up taxes in our state.
For example, a average home in the low $100K range can have a property tax of $2500 and up. What's worse is your neighbor can have a similar house and literally pay half as much. I asked our county assessor exactly how the taxes are figured and she couldn't understand it herself.
Another crazy tax is for auto excise tax. Say you bought a $25,000 car in 2006. Tax can run well above $500/yr.
Is your state worse? What is the big "rip off" in your state?

I bought a new F-150 earlier this month and it's almost time to pay the sales tax. I live in Missouri and the sales tax rate for my county is 5.85%. The city i live in tacks on an additional 2%. A friend of mine has lived in a neighboring city for around 10 years and has bought 6 new cars says that he simply tells the person at the DMV he lives in the county (not a lie, but leaves out the fact that he also lives within the city limits) therefore paying the lower tax rate. As i've said this has been going on over the last 10 years and he has had no problems. My wife and I are pretty conservative and don't have the guts to do that, but would like to know how likely it is that he will be caught, what agency would likely catch this, and what the possible repercussions could be. He claims that there is no risk.

Many Americans pay Federal taxes every year. I do as part of my "Fair Share" into the system. I've read of the people in New Hampshire, and many Ex-IRS agents are starting to come forward and claiming that Fed Taxes are illegal and unconstitutional for the "in-country" citizen. They claim that it was never ratified or written into law. Some jurors in tax evasion cases were threatened by the FEDs to rule in their favor or they would face some type of backlash. These people are not evading anything...their jurors in a court case. One group offered anyone 50,000dollars for anyone to prove that the income tax was legal, and enforceable. It's been several years and no one has been able to claim the money. In all cases in court you would think that the court would allow the tax code as written to be used as evidence in the case. I've learned through the"freedom of information act"that in ALL cases that the court would not allow it to be looked at or even admitted into court. What's up people?
