I live in Indiana. We have some messed up taxes in our state.
For example, a average home in the low $100K range can have a property tax of $2500 and up. What's worse is your neighbor can have a similar house and literally pay half as much. I asked our county assessor exactly how the taxes are figured and she couldn't understand it herself.
Another crazy tax is for auto excise tax. Say you bought a $25,000 car in 2006. Tax can run well above $500/yr.
Is your state worse? What is the big "rip off" in your state?

MO is far from the worst place I've lived. Property taxes are reasonable -- about 1/4 of what you're paying. Sales tax is on the high side. Income tax caps out at 6%. And the vehicle excise is a bit lower than IN it seems.

TX was the worst by far! They like to brag that they don't have an income tax but property taxes are INSANE. About 5x as high as MO. My property taxes in TX were higher than my income tax, property tax and vehicle excise tax in MO combined! Couldn't way to get out of Taxa$!

The taxes here in Virginia aren't too terrible but they just passed a law as of July 1st that says any Va resident caught speeding now has to pay a huge fine that starts at $1000 and can go up depending on whether it's considered reckless driving or not.(which here is 10 miles over the speed limit or more)
