Is there a website anyone knows of that tells you how much should come out of your check for taxes. I know that it depends on how much you make and how many exemptions you claim but I'm looking for an actual breakdown. I think that my husbands company is taking out too much. Thanks for all of the help!

mortgage company. I heard that if the mortgage company accepts a lesser amount than what you owe that a 1099 will be sent to you and the IRS and that the difference is considered taxable income. example, owe $160,000 mortgage and house sels for $100,000 at a sheriff's sale. Would 60,000 of that be considered earned income? Thanks.

My fiance and I plan to get married before this year is up, but I was wondering if it is wiser to wait until 2008 to get married for a bigger refund when it comes to tax time? I make around $10k a year, and he makes around $26k. Would I get a bigger tax refund if I claimed single, with one dependent and he claims single, or if we got married and did a joint return would that be better? I only ask because we really could use the money to get a better house. Last year he claimed our daughter and I claimed single. He got about $3400 total but I'm not sure how much exactly was from the child tax credit. So basically do married couples receive more of a refund, or would a single/unmarried mother?

I inherited 400 acres. My mom and dad paid 600 an acre for it. Now it is worth $3,000 an acre. I do not want to sell it. I want to keep farming it. Do I have to pay the capital gains on the land if I do not sell it , but keep it?

We received a letter the other day telling us our 2005 taxes are being reviewed. What exactly does this mean? Are we being audited? Is this going to turn into one huge headache for us? If you've ever received a letter from the IRS telling you that your tax forms are "being reviewed", please let me know about your experience. Thanks

Or do I have to wait for 2008 to claim him since we would have only been married for less than a month in 2007?

I have recently ordered goods from America. I got a letter today saying that I had to pay VAT on the item, which is fine. The only problems is that I have been charged £18.60 for the VAT, when the cost of the items was only £80. £18.60 is more than 17.5% of £80. Why have I been charged this much, it is more than actual VAT? The letter also says there is no import duty, just VAT?

I recently made a sizable purchase of source code for a website. The source code was written by myself and a friend. I started with an equity interest in the business, but it didn't work out. I recently came up with another idea for a business and used money earned from consulting work to purchase the source code in full so that I can repurpose it for my new idea. I paid a few thousand dollars for this source code. I'm curious what options I have for a tax deduction.
