I just got my 2006 federal tax return in the mail yesterday, does anyone know when I can expect my 2005 amended tax return? Are they suppose to come at the same time? Should I be worried?

So, I'm a freelance employee. An my last client didn't ask me to fill out a 1099--he just paid my invoice in full. When it comes to taxes next year, I assume I'll pay both taxes and SS... but how do I figure that out? Shouldn't the client offer a 1099, or is there a way to do this without? Other helpful info--I'm not an LLC or any other legal company. Just a person doing some stuff. ;)

Someone I know has rented their flat for a small amount of time (under yr) to a student therefore can claim back the council Tax. However if they try to claim the money back they inform the Local Govt that their property has been rented. Therefore news might get back to the Tax man thus would they have to pay income tax on the rent income? The rent income only covered the mortgage so no money (profit) was made but are they still taxable? If so would it be best not to claim back the council tax so no one knows the flat's been rented.

I know there are different tax rates based on how long you hold onto a stock. Is there a similar rule based on the % change in value? For example, if your stock goes up 10% vs 50%.

If social security is estimated to last until 2041 and medicare until 2019 ( in either case by the time I reach retirement , these funds will be depleted)..why do they continue to take these out of my paycheck? As my parents generation were working, didn't the money they put in go to fund their generations benefits? Why is money taken out of the younger generations benefits if they will not be able to benefit from it;. Couldn't I just take that money and invest it myself? Thanks

In this movie, a woman owes $500 in taxes on her home. The government therefore confiscates her home, leaving her with no cash and nowhere to sleep except her car.

In reality, if this happened, wouldn't the government take your house, auction it, then take the owed taxes from the proceeds, and then give you the change (in this case thousands of dollars)?

If so, this movie doesn't make a lick of sense.

because I've heard urban legends (?) to the effect that some people have successfully used this as an excuse for not paying. What is the status of this legend?

If I start a business doing something I go to school for, can I deduct all of my college tuition as a business expense or just the interest? I figure I wouldn't be able to start a business without the training so I was thinking that all of my tuition would be a valid expense. However, I don't know all of the tax laws in the U.S.

This tax year(2006), I lost the claiming of 2 dependents on my tax filing to my ex-wife because I had outstanding child care payments due(the final order makes this stipulation). The childcare center has an amazingly "hokey" billing system, and it turns out I wasnt made aware of an outstanding balance till mid-February...too late to rectify to keep my 2 dependents on my taxes for 2006. The billing practices of this childcare center are archaic and can not be understood by the parent(me). This billing SNAFU cost me the loss of the EIC credit and I now owe IRS +$4400 because of this misunderstanding of the childcare centers billing procedures/unclear-hidden outstanding balance. Do I have a case for billing malfeance?

I work as an intern for my church and only make $1,000 a month. I know very little about taxes, but I have heard that if your income is below a certain amount that there is a way to get a tax return either in part or full. Can anyone verify or help me out with this, thanks.

Hey everybody, My father died about two years ago. He didn't have much of anything but we inherited his house which we just sold this house last month. After our expenses (painting the house, real estate fees, power bills) we will each get $10k.

How do taxes on this work? I would think that we'll have to report the money on our 2007 taxes but I want to make sure.

Thanks for your help,
Jim

On there IRS Website where you can check the status of your refund, it states that my refund was direct deposited into my account on April 20th, 2007.

My refund has not shown up on my bank rec. There are also no deposits pending. I checked the numbers on the forms I mailed in and the routing an account numbers are correct.

Payroll direct deposits do not take this long to post, so why would this direct deposit take so long? Any ideas?
