We live in the Front Range of Colorado (1 hour west of Denver) and I have been told that home insurance companies don't want to cover us as the risk of fire is too great and therefore will use any reason to drop us.

My sister in law came over my home to visit, she was parked behind me and I was going to run out and grab a pizza, I asked her if I could just borrow her car instead of moving it out of the way to take mine. BIG MISTAKE. As I was leaving my block I was making a right hand turn and there was a car making a left hand turn, We where right next to each other. The seventeen year old driving the car changed her mind and instead of making a left turn, she made a right turn, did not bother to look before she stepped on the gas, burned rubber and sideswiped the left side of the car tearing off the bumper and damaging all the front fender and both lights. My sister in laws car is a PT Cruiser and you can just imagine the damages. I found out once I got home that my sister in law did not have car insurance. I called my insurance company and they say I am not covered under my policy. Also have two witnesses who saw other driver was at fault. Will her insurance pay for the damages? Thanks!!

I am thinking about purchasing life insurance as a long term investment and as a potential way to borrow money off the policy in the next 10-15 years.

My husband and I got car insurance. Before our policy was up I got into a minor accident (me and my neighbor accross the street backed up at same time- it was ruled I was at fault --I had the slower car apparently). I immediatly reported incedent to our insurance. When the 6 mo policy was up my husband and I switched to a cheaper company. I told them about the accident and we paid our 6 months in advance because we saved the state income tax check to do it so we would have the money. I got a phone call 2 wks ago from my agent and she told me that the neighbor had just filed and it came thru so we'd have to pay extra but they would just charge us the extra cost of our insurance going up. Well, we couldn't really afford this and I was thinking about a second job but we were gonna wait and see how much more it was going to cost us. We had no thought of switching companies and told her this. We were happy with where we were. she said a bill would be sent out. instead we got cancelled.

I was reading recently that insurance companies are now using family history to calculate rates and even deny coverage where they can perceive a loss or bad investment. I believe most corporate employees are protected from such scrutiny and must be allowed to join group policies except where pre-existing conditions allow the insurance company to opt out. But, self-employed or employees of say a small private school may not he able to obtain reasonably priced coverage because their Mom's dad had a heart attack, colon cancer, etc...

Some states allow you to prove "financial responsibility" instead of purchasing auto insurance. If you don't have a mortgage, nobody will force you to buy homeowner's insurance. Has anybody done it? How does it work? and would you recommend it? I think insurance -- any insurance -- should ONLY be purchased if it is a good deal financially, and if not, why should you if you are willing and financially able to take the risk yourself? Shouldn't it be a goal to become self-sufficient whereever possible?

I would like to hear your comments.
