My husband and I got car insurance. Before our policy was up I got into a minor accident (me and my neighbor accross the street backed up at same time- it was ruled I was at fault --I had the slower car apparently). I immediatly reported incedent to our insurance. When the 6 mo policy was up my husband and I switched to a cheaper company. I told them about the accident and we paid our 6 months in advance because we saved the state income tax check to do it so we would have the money. I got a phone call 2 wks ago from my agent and she told me that the neighbor had just filed and it came thru so we'd have to pay extra but they would just charge us the extra cost of our insurance going up. Well, we couldn't really afford this and I was thinking about a second job but we were gonna wait and see how much more it was going to cost us. We had no thought of switching companies and told her this. We were happy with where we were. she said a bill would be sent out. instead we got cancelled.

I did claim with the former company it's the neighbor who waited months to file. I informed my current company of the accident but former company handled the claim.

I don't understand this situation? Previous company has to accept the claim. New company is creepy. Find another insurance carrier.

I don't quite understand this question. Which company is trying to collect from you?
Your relationship with the prior company has expired. Auto insurance is a per occurance policy, so the company carrying the risk at the time of the accident is responsible for the loss, even if you changed carriers. That company cannot make any claim for extra money against you.
The new company may be able to raise your rates when your policy comes up for renewal, but it can't raise them retroactively.
Did you get a ticket that carried points? In some states, the insurance carriers can add a surcharge on your bill, but again, it usually is only allowed when the policy comes up for renewal.
If the subsequent carrier cancelled you, I would contact the state insurance department and talk to them about it. They might either get you reinstated for the remainder of the policy or at least get you a refund.

Actually the claim should have been filed with the company you were insured with at the time of the accident, not on the new company.
The new company can choose to cancel your policy, but I would not advise doing business with this type of company...they should have told you the options available. Now that you have been cancelled by one company, it will be harder for you to get good rates, or even coverage.
Locate a new company and explain the reason behind the cancellation...and file the claim with the proper company. Your neighbor did you a dis-service by waiting so long to file the claim.

When the claim is filed is not relevant. When the accident occur ed is. Whichever company insured the car at the time of the accident is responsible. If you change insurance companies the day after the accident, the first company would still be responsible. The change in your driving record is grounds for an increase in your premium. I hope this answers your question. I'm not sure whose behavior you are asking about.

i might want to imagine that the immoral area may be like activities, putting holes contained in the wall or basically doing something that isnt crossing the line of unlawful yet issues that would not be acceptiable in a rented condominium!
