Philosophy - November 2006

Fancy and fact have clashed for a lot of times. In my class we are doing an argument about fact vs fancy and i am arguing that fact is better than fancy. I have had some ideas but i want also your input. tell me all about why fact is better than fancy. For your information, this argument is based on Hard times, Charles Dickens's book. Put everything you've got! It's an argument so fire with everything and every example and quote you have!!!

I am asking the question in all sincerity and good faith - it does surprise me why they are not making the best use of their sensitive and incisive mind (so high in EQ as well) for public good, for that is what politics is really meant for.

If you could find out what was gong to happen to you next week or next year or whenever with complete accuracy would you really want to know?

If your future was bad and unavoidable what you would you do?

I'm glad that we can't see our own futures and would not want to know even if we could. There'd be no fun in finding it out at the time.

I've heard so many people say "Oh time is just an illusion, it doesn't really exist!" My opinion is that the question whether time exists independently of the human brain or not cannot be answered. In other words, I think it's impossible to say whether time is a property of the universe or a property of the human mind. What do y'all think?

There is another possiblity of eternal life, but this one depends on the universe being "closed", not "open" as in the first Consolation. In other words, the universe must be an oscallating one; one that is caught in an infinite cycle of Big Bangs and Big Crunches. If the physics of each universe is the same as our own then after a long enough wait intellegent life will evolve on a earth-like planet. After a tremendous amount of time an intelligent being will eventually have an exact replica of your brain. Will you be reincarnated as this being? Why or why not? Also, if this universe is not closed, do you think an sufficiently advanced civilization who has discovered this possiblity might try to somehow create enough matter to reverse the expansion of the universe so that this possiblity becomes true? Or maybe the reverse; maybe after a finite number of rebirths a sufficiently advanced civilization will try to turn a closed universe into a open one so that the reincarnations stop?

The British scientist J.B.S Haldane early in the 20th century came up with a very strange possibility for eternal life; he imagined a far future in which everything in the universe was nothing more than a very thin, cold gas. If you wait long enough, and if the physical conditions of the universe are right, then statistical flucuations in the gas will be suffient to reproduce everything we see around us. After an IMMENSELY long time an identical copy of you and everyone you know and love will be reborn. This will happen not once but an infinite number of times; sometimes you will have full recollection of the previous reincarnations, other times you wont. Do you think the Consolation of Haldane is possible? Also, do you think we have been reincarnated an infinite number of times but for this particular reincarnation we simply have no memory of the previous ones?

If you are to think about it logically, we are in a chaotic world because there are a lot of people who exist having IQs lower than average. Just try to think (and I already did a lot of times now), they are really the main reason of every inhuman acts ever known in this world...

Well, anonymity could also give us the freedom to express our innermost thoughts and ideas. This question is obviously more apt over here in the philosophy section, for it is always difficult to say which answer is right or which is not. So, are we freaking out opening up our real personality over here due to the anonymity advantage?
