The Americans got a real kicking and at the time it was a major success for the Japanese.

All countries celebrate past victories in battle particually us English even where looking back, we were in the wrong.

How do the Japanese view it now?

Reason championed over superstition during the Enlightment in Europe. The mind was finally set free from all preconceptions. Theories could only be proven by acute observation and experimentation. The church was at last not the biggest influence of humanity.

Europeans will agree with me, there are no religious extremists of European ascendance.

I would take Vincent Van gogh (who basically lived a life of a pauper, never knowing if people really loved his art)

I'd take Vincent to a Sotherby's auction and watch the expression change on his face as the price went up to 100 million dollars.
That would be a smile I pay to see.
