I have traced my ancestory back to a John Shuman who lived in Pennsylvania before it was colonized. I am trying to understand if he changed his name from Schumann to Shuman because of concerns about his German heritage or because he may have been Jewish...hence the name Shuman. Perhaps his name was Johann Shumann when he came to our shores??

My family has recently found out that my grandmother was 1/2 native american. However, I have no way to prove this as it was due to an unsubstantiated relationship of her mother's and was kept secret until my grandmother's death. Is there any way to get a CIB card with dna only, without knowing exact names and history of ancestors?

I am ready to buy some genealogy software and am getting confused by reviews and what can do what.
I'd like to:

A. See me, my sibling and my grandmothers first cousins and aunts on a chart- (albeit a wide one!) (Not just me and direct ancestors)

B. Attach photos and input personal stories

C. Link to other trees on-line when a connection is made.

D. Attach info from Ellis Island.org, Ancestry.com and other on-line databases. (Does only Family Treemaker provide an import from Ancestry.com?)

E. Easy, user friendly interface. I'm not computer saavy. I need something easy to use.

F. Publishing capability a plus!

Thank you so much for your advice!

My grandfather doesn't have a birth certificate. And we always went by my great-grandmothers maiden name. I'm really needing to know this because I'm trying to find out how much Native American we have in our family.

His name was Sidney Spencer and he served on the HMS Dunedin WW2 on which his was listed as MIA when she went down.
His parental family are all from Yorkshire but his wife and daughter lived (daughter still does) in Portsmouth. There are no documents relating to Sidney or photographs as everything was destroyed in the bombings.
Any information on him or his parental family is eagerly desired.

How am I to go about tracing my family line? I'm not about the money I really just want to know a great deal more about my heritage and to become a active member in the Native American society. It's sad that I needto have documentation to prove that I'm someone that I believe to be all my life. So how am I to handle my situation? Thank you

Looking for John Dotter, wife Catharine. Catharine born 1853 died 1896. Buried in Trenton NJ in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetary. John and Catharine came from Germany. Son Michael was born in US in Trenton NJ in 1862 and Michael J. died in 1909 and his wife's name was Mary E. (Ruff) Dotter. That is all the information I have. Maybe when John & Catharine came over from Germany they changed the spelling of their name? I am at a dead end......
