I have a family tree that shows one of my Scottish ancestors with the title 'Captain of the Scots', but I can't find any information onto what this might mean. Any ideas?

G'day,

Thank you for your question.

It probably refers to the Scots Guard who guarded the kings of France from at least 882 AD through the middle ages. The captain of the Scots was in charge of 40 men at arms and 80 archers so it was quite a responsible position. The Scots Guard should not be confused with the Scots Guards who are part of the British army.

I have attached sources for your reference.

Regards
