I tried to update Ancestry.com with my family tree information and I noticed that someone corrected it and made my grandfather and cousin linked to someone else's tree and I know for a fact that it isn't so the way they fixed it. How do you prevent this from happening? I thought it was for people to update their own personal tree not someone else's.

My paternal grandmother is half Jamaican. Her father was Portuguese and her mother Jamaican. So what percentage of me is Jamaican? My mother says I'm 1/4 Jamaican and 1/8 Portuguese. I think I'm 1/8 Jamaican at best. A friend told me I was 1/16 Jamaican. Who's correct?

There are 3 branches of Judaism and they do not define a Jew the same way. Reform Jews state that those who adhere to the Jewish faith are Jews.
The Orthodox pretty much has one sole criteria, a Jewish mother, not necessarily a Jewish father.
They state they get the nation from the mother and the tribe from the father and if a person doesn't have a Jewish father they belong to the tribe of the nearest male relative on the mother's side of the family. Conservatives are sort of in between.
Wouldn't this mean that the mitochondrial DNA of Jews would indicate more of a racical strain than the Y and even the autosomal would be more than the Y?
My maternal grandfather was a Jew and his children did not know until after he died. They were not raised as Jews or around Jews except their father. However, an observer of my aunts, who had been around Jews a lot, would have identified them as Jewish, in appearance and in the way they expressed themselves. Idiosyncrancies are inherited.

My name is Nancy Eileen. I have always hated my name. I am named after my Aunt Nancy. My middle name was given to me by another aunt but isn't a "hand me down" name of any sort. I guess it has the same meaning as my grandmother.

I am nearly 40 years old and I haven't liked my name for my entire life because it has always sounded old. I am thinking of changing my name to Anne Marie. Anne is a form of Nancy and is my daughter's middle name. Marie is my mother's middle name.

Any other ideas? Do you think it is too late in life to change my name?

Thanks!

It appears that many names have the word "son" in them. I'm guessing that Robertson means "Robert's son." Is this true? And does Van der Bilt mean "Bilt's son" and McIntire "Intire's son"?

What is the best FREE geneaology site? I don't want one that is just a free trial, but I do want one that has a lot of information. I came across one months ago, and now I cannot remember what it was. Any suggestions?

I'm trying to research two different things.

1. My boyfriends canadian geneaology. Both of his parents are deceased and he knows very little of any relatives beyond them. His parents moved to B.C. from Saskatchewan(I'm positive I've spelled that incorrectly and I do apologize) probably in the 40's.

2. I'm also looking for my own ancestors. My biological father was adopted, I think. I have no contact with him, which is just the way I like it. However, I would really like to be able to trace my ancestors biologically and not just through my father who adopted me. Any suggestions on how to go about this?

At the very least I would be happy with the site info. Thanks!
