Have a look at the two links I have posted for you'http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx
http://www.your-familytree.com/
with the second one, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the first letter of the surname you want to research then type in your surname, and it should come up with a family crest for your name as well.

BEWARE OF COAT OF ARMS PEDDLERS.
There are no laws in the United States re heraldry.
There are companies that will sell you one based on your surname only without documented proof that you are a direct descendant of the person granted the coat of arms. I believe they are descendants of snake oil salesmen.
Many coats of arms have the same name. There are about 200 for the surname Lewis. That means 200 different individuals named Lewis were granted a coat of arms. That doesn't mean
everyone with the surname Lewis is any way related to any of the 200 granted a coat of arms.
Not everyone with the same surname come from the same root. There was a time when people did not have surnames. They were given or they took the names based on the fact that they were the son of someone (Jackson,Wilson) their occupation (miller, fisher, smith, baker) their habitation(town, castle they lived close to, lake, lliving on a hill)
There is no such thing as a family crest. Crest were added to coat of arms for a noble deed. The about the Elizabethan period all coats of arms issued had crests. However they are passed from father to the oldest son..
