I don't want to live in an enclave of foreigners. I am willing to live semi rustically with basic services, quietly and humbly among the native people Sshhhhhh. Where's the sweet spot?

I want to spend christmas and new years in Peru, but the plane tickets are so expensive. Does anybody know any secrets on how to find the cheapest tickets? I heard midnight is a good time to purchase. Is that true?

I am making my plans quite late and may have to spend a lot more to get there. Also, it's the rainy season, I am travelling alone - and I am not used to hiking. I heard that the ruins were nothing much to see, but the location is superb. So unless you do the hike, it's not worth it.

My budget is about $30 per night and I would like a funky modern place to eat, preferably with breakfast included.

I am in Lima for three nights en-route to Cajamraca. Would like to do a bit of sightseeing so either close to the sights, or easy transport links would be good.

Also a lone female so I have to take account of that, so the area needs to be safe for lone women.

I'd like to know what the cost of living is in Peru (I guess there will be variations as there are in all countries). How much does groceries, transport, clothes, toletries etc cost.
I'm living there for a few months and would like to know how far my budget will go.

I'd prefer the priced in Soles cos the conversion rate for British pounds changes.

I am going to Peru for 2 1/2 months from Oct to Dec. I have a low luggage allowance on the plane (20kg!!!!) so I need to only be taking the essentials. What kind of clothes to I want to take?
I am going for a medical elective so I have to make sure that I have clothes suitable for smart work. I also plan on going travelling for about two weeks in December, what kind of clothes would be best for this.

Is it going to be hot/humid/rainy ect?
I've been looking at the weather in Cajamarca at the mo, but I guess it wont tell me much about what it's actually like to be there.

Thanks

I am flying in from Buenos Aires and I have a week to do the entire trip. I would like to travel safely but I need to cut down costs. I would like to know about availability of vegetarian food on the trip.

I am just curious how long that amount of money would last if I didn't blow it all, and spent it wisely.

I have to take malarial prophylaxis for a 2 1/2 month trip to Peru. I have three choices of malarial prophylaxis. Malarone (way too expensive for me), doxycycline and mefloquine. My doctor recomends mefloquine as doxycyclin give a rash in the sun and he doesn't reccomend it for Peru.

So what I want to know is has anyone taken mefloquine? and what side effects have you had from it?

I have read to British National Formulary and have read all the possible side effects so I do not need a list. Just what people have actually suffered.

Thanks

I am going in October for two weeks mostly to Lima, Macchu Piccu, maybe a little of the Amazon and then up to the beachside in the Northwest.
