My father has been sailing all his life (I'm relatively new to it) and understands how to do it. We've been given and old boat by a friend to repair. The paneling is cracked on top and stuff, but its structurally very strong. I'd love to help out because it seems like a great proccess, but I would like to have more knowledge about it so i understand why we're doing what we're doing!

So. Any books?

I just moved to Maryland and live right on a river, with lots of creeks nearby. At the local kayak store they recommended a recreational kayak, the Pungo 120, but I'm looking for some unbiased opinions. Once I'm comfortable in the kayak, I'd like to take my dog (35 lb mixed breed) with me - she's got a life jacket and has been canoing many times, so I know she'd love this - so any additional advice on kayaking with a dog, or kayaks good for human plus dog, would be appreciated.

I was just wondering if anyone knows where I could try out Kayaking with a rental and good lessons in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I do not want to invest in a new one unless I know I like it and I know what I am doing!

a dinghy. I don't know much about sailing. Can anyone recommend a make of dinghy, what sort of price in sterling I should be looking at second hand. I like the look of a topper dinghy, but it looks like only one person can go on it. Could he take friend on that dinghy? What sort of things should I look out for or should I avoid when buying a dinghy. Any help gratefully received. As we are beginners, I don't want to be conned. Thanks.

I'm looking to buy a kayak but I don't want to spend a ton of money because it's something I'm just getting into. I would like a two seater and it seems that the only ones in my price range are inflatable. I'll mostly be taking it out on a smallish lake that doesn't have huge waves. Do you think an inflatable kayak would be worth the money?

I can get in and out of my yak when in open water no problem, and I can get in easily by wading into the water when that's an option. But when I'm paddling in lakes filled with human or cow dung, I have trouble getting in from banks or docks. Every time I have to "portage" I find it tough, especially if I am holding a half-rack of brew in addition to the yak. I paddle flat water around farmland, and I also enjoy paddling in areas that are polluted by industry and raw sewage, so getting soaked in "cow water" and industrial/human waste is something I wish to avoid.
