The surf shop is located up in the Northern Hemisphere by cold waters. The shop is located 2 hours from the coast in a large city.

How long did it take you to learn how to surf. And also could you predict how good someone could get after only 3 months. But they're a fast learner... lightning fast.

I'm looking to go on a trip either in the second half of august, or in October. I'm not looking for the biggest waves in the world necessarily but consistency is key. I want (need, it's been a cold winter) to surf in boardies.

Also, we're taking our girlfriends along, so going somewhere with something to do/explore would be good. I've looked at Lombok and Sri Lanka but can't find much on the consistency of swell in that season.

Any advice would be welcome.

Ok heres the dealio. I've been skateboarding for some time now and ive decided it got kinda boring, so now im moving to surfing. This SPORT LOOKS AMAZING, i cant wait ti learn. I've already started looking at training dvds but one thing they dont explain is what type of board to get. Now if ur a skater you know the difference between a "Wal-mart" board and a pro board. There are also top brands in skateboarding and not so top brands. Can someone give me some brands of good surfboards? Idk if this helps but im slim/athletic build at about 6'0. SHould i look for certain board dimensions for my size and also because I'm a beginnner? SHould my board be wide? long? short? skinny? Any suggestions? So yea i just need some good brands and maybe an estimate on board dimensions i should get for a beginner. Please I need to know, summer is startin soon, i want to be able to be an OK surfer by August. Man thanx a lot dudes and gals =)

How is a new surfer supposed to get better when all the other surfers out there are jerks?! I thought the surfing lifestyle was relaxed and loving, but so far I've only gotten jerks! On sunday I was out catching some baby waves, I was already up surfing the wave when this local just dropped in and side swiped me, I fell and opened my knees on the rocks below! Now I know not to get on waves that are already taken, and thats exactly what I did. I was staying out of the way of the better surfers, but it was like they were just gunning for all the KIDS and non-locals. Since when could a beach be "claimed"? Uggh! So after this incident I decided to leave to a more secluded beach, where I could just relax and go at my own pace....but no, I was wrong. The little hidden spot that I know of had ONE surfer, and he was WAAAAY worse than the 40 surfers at the other beach! He would just cut straight in front the the waves that we were about to catch, AND HE WOULDNT EVEN RIDE THEM! I'm so upset!

I'm familiar with the coast guard's 5 types of vests for various water sports.

These are top of the line for sure. Water patrol always has great vests. Has Laird ever mentioned what they use? (Not going to be surfing Jaws, just want to know.)

Saw a movie years back with a helicopter that was down surfing in these huge waves, disappearing under the waves and coming out. Can't remember the name of it, but I remember it being just awesome.
