I am learning how to surf i live in s.w. fl so i surf alot of storms here and i go to the other coast alot (subastian inlet, jupiter,etc) I am wondering what kind of board i should get. I am 6ft, 195 lbs. I have been out 4 times and i really like it alot.

i dont really see any long boarders out there. I surf head high waves and they tend to closeout alot so i dont know how good a long board would be.

Dude, I'd say go for a 7'6 or 7'9 epoxy board, mini-Mal is probably better that a longboard cause you'll get to use it for longer and it has better maneuverability. also it you get a good brand like Bic then you'll easily be able to sell it on when you get better! enjoy i wish i could be surfing now...

If you're surfing in closeout beach breaks, you'll definitely want a shorter board. Since you're just starting out, you don't want to go too small either. You should look at some bigger fishes like 9:Fish Surfboard's 7'4" Hammerhead. It thick and wide so it'll be easy to paddle and catch waves with while being short enough to make the quick turns. You can always go with a 'fun board.' That's what I learned on. It was like a long board, but only 7'6." I liked it because it was still small enough to maneuver and do tricks on once I learned how to surf on it.
I still have that board (took it out this weekend, in fact).
It's always good to have a few different boards to take out depending on conditions and wave size. Try to work on getting one short board, one medium/ fun board, and one long board. That way, if the waves are small and mushy, you can still catch them on the fun board or long board. If they're a little bigger and cleaner, you can take out the short board.
My husband is 6'1" and about 185lbs. He rides a 6'4" on "good days" and he takes out my fun board when it's really small and mushy.

go with a long board, being on the west cost we hear it does not get too big over there. you will have more success on
that, they are easier to learn on and if you ever want to go
to a short board the the change will be easier.

For your size and weight and the wave size you surf, I'd say get a 6'6" rounded squash tail with thick rails.
