I just moved into new building and tenants are reserved. nobody says hi to anybody, but i feel weird just to pass by looking in front of myself/or carpet. if i say hi, should i get into some unnecessary crap? this whole new environment is weird..

I'm currently writing a children's novel. The readers' age group will probably be 10-14. The main character is a teenage girl who lives with an alcoholic mother. So there will definitely be alcohol, and maybe pot, in her enviroment. Also, an important part of the story is a chapter where she drowns her sorrows in a bottle of wine. That part won't be glamourized...it will be portrayed like she's doing something stupid. Do you think I'm overstepping the bounds?

The other day I said that I did not want to live in Memphis because it is 66 % African American and I would not be comfortable there. A black guy a few cubicals over heard that and got really mad. Is that a racist statement? Point of fact this guy who is AA lives in a 67 % AA city / town. Please help me. I never considered myself a racist or bigot.
