There's nothing to keep people from starting a new
church and set up an agenda they prefer, so that's
what has happened. Most people in America were
protestants that all worshipped the God of the Holy
Bible but started different names and only the kind
of worship is different - some contemporary and
others traditional; some charasmatic and some
prayerful and quiet; some with many instruments
and others that sing accapella; some that take
communion once a quarter and others that have
communion every Sunday; some that worship on
Saturday and others always on Sunday; some that
have dinners in their church and others that forbade
that. So, people can choose how they wish to worship
and, therefore, attend the church of their choice.

I am surprised to note that two out of three answers talk in context to Christianity alone. Please try to understand that there are other religions being followed around the world. While Christianity may be beautiful as a faith, that definitely does not make other religions such as Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism and others less marvellous.

Basically, religion or faith prescribes one basic truth - God as Almighty or the supreme being. The world's a large place and filled with different kinds of landscape and people. This caused a difference in approaching God. However, importantly the concept of God never changed. Christ & Allah as messemgers of God were not messengers of different Gods. Neither was Lord Shiva considered to be a different God. It was all in the tenets of some learned men who understood the requirement of faith for human beings to follow a civilsed life, to respect what nature has given them in form of life.

So based on the regions and understanding, people took up different religions according to what they understood about faith and about life. The confusion and the consequential differences between religions is then the outcome of man again, who always wants things arranged to his own comfort.

Hope I was able to drive in a point.

Why are there so many religions in the world? If that is your question, let me explain. When Christ died on the cross, there was only one faith and that was faith in Him. He established one church on the day of Pentecost. Acts Chapter 2. It was not until some time later that men got tired of doing things God's way, so they decided to establish their own church. This is where the first division from the Lord's church took place. There is only one church only one body of believers that the Lord died for and you can find that church in the new testament. God did not establish all the different religious faiths, only what you will find in His word. The Lord's church is not a manmade church and it's head is Christ, not some man. Read this for yourself.
