Successful people and misunderstood people are always targets by the "mindless" thoughtless masses. Religions are not different than other forms of hatred.
My dear IT is simply just ignorance! Little minds that have to make themselves "feel" better by not understanding or accepting the beauty of diversity.
A few hundred years ago it was the British
A few decades ago the Germans
Then followed by years of hatred of Blacks.
Then it was Koreans, Russians, Vietnamese.
Two years ago it was Muslims and Non-Christians.
Last year a renewed hatred of Iranians, Middle eastern folks.
This year it is Mexicans or Illegal Aliens.
America is built on the diversity and the common goal of "we the people" need to be on OUR TEAM, not against each other.
I am proudly an American mutt. A native Texan and I love my Mexican neighbors no matter their status. They help my community everyday. No matter what the news says, I see it first hand. I know the truth. I live it.
FYI- All groups are targets- I agree with that statement.
Exiled and almost killed- the Dali lama is not welcome in his own land for over forty years! The Buddhist temples were destroyed in the middle east and china just last year.
Talk to a Hindi- here in the bible belt they are ridiculed as heathens all the time.

It's the most ancient hatred in our society. Some people see the Jews as the 'Canary in the mine'. Meaning, how society treats the Jews is indicative of how society is progressing and how well it is doing, and the bad stuff that is happening to the Jews and Israel will eventually happen to the whole world. This is actually what is happening now with global terrorism. No one wanted to help Israel fight it back in the day and now they are still attacked for defending themselves while the same terrorists are attacking, or orchestrating attacks.
ps. jews are unfortunately more than ridiculed. In France right now Rabbis are telling their communities not to go out in Jewish clothing for fear that they will be beaten. Even Jewish children have been attacked in Paris this year.

People tend to ridicule any race other than their race. If the world were consisted only one race, people start picking on the rather different one. Even in a family, the smallest group of society, there always somebody to be ridiculed. Its so human.
