Economics - May 2007

Basically we are in a deep discussion about basic economics. We all work for the same company. Lets say our company gives a 3% raise annually but the rate of inflation is 4.5%. Are the employees falling behind more and more every year or is this an illusion? Hopefully some economics major will jump in here!

I'd also like to point out that when applying for a job you are basically selling your services to the company. Just like when a company sells you a product or a service. No one will buy a product at the most expensive store if the SAME product can be found somewhere else for cheaper. Same goes for employers and yourself.

What do YOU think about it?

I believe that on this information age the supply and demand theory of economy can no longer be accepted because information plays a tremendous role on how the supply and demand is controlled. Any thougths?

While watching the news the other day, the reporter was actually shocked that the demand for gas had not gone down with recent gas spikes. However, his coworker sitting next to him stated, "People still have to go to work and continue their day to day activities." But the reporter gave some bogus reasoning and continued his line of questioning. What's your take?

"Government can and must play the kind of role that it so successfully performed after World War II, in creating the largest middle class in America’s history. Only government can set minimum standards for wages, health coverage, health and safety, paid sick days, retirement security, and the right to organize a union that ensure that hard working Americans have the basics of a decent life. Only government can ensure that families can be both responsible workers and caring family members by updating the outdated workplace practices and supports. Only government can play the pivotal role in leveraging our resources to provide what workers need to succeed in our new global economy, and create the supports for workers and their families as they move across jobs and/or in and out of the labor force as their life and jobs circumstances change over time. And it is government which has an irreplaceable role in ensuring that all children have the tools they need to fulfill their potential..."

I admit I am neither a farmer no an economist, but
can anyone imagine a scenario were farm subsidies
end without lots of farmers leaving the business?

1: We have too much farm capability for the economy
to support without subsidies.

2: We don't want to see thousands of farmers forced
into destitution because they can't get a good enough
price because of competition. We treasure the idea
of the "family farm".

Does this mean that we're going to be subsidizing
them forever? Is that what the taxpayer signed up for?

Surely we should be subsidizing them to change
crops to something more self sustaining or education
and training to pick another business.

Am I being cruel or realistic?

I see single welfare moms sitting on their duffs, yakking on their CELL PHONE all day long.
They are putting welfare money on their incarcerated husbands'/boyfriends' books.
They are high on drugs all the while.
Not ALL of them live this way,but a good portion of them do.
The sole reason they are getting these funds(their children)end up getting short-changed by this government subsidized behavior. Why does this continue on a large scale ?

By the way, this happens among ALL races.

We Americans use 24 million barrels of oil per day. India by comparison uses 2 billion barrels per day despite having many times our population and at least one third the size of our economy! Why do we need so much here? We need to change here this is out of control. Also, governments who subsidize gasoline are to blame too. That puts a hold on the free market and contributes to demand. This sucks. I wish they'd go down.

would that force the gas prices to drop? We complain about the price but we still fill up our tanks every day. If we used our cars less, could we force the companies to lower the prices? It's about supply and demand, right? I just read that other countries are paying between 25 cents to $2 a gallon. So I'm wondering how can we, the consumers, demand the prices to be lower?

Why is gas only about a quarter in venezuela? Is it b/c the price of gas will affect the demand for it in certain countries, and that's how they set the price?

How much will the cars cost?
In Europe the MiniCAT's will be put forward at a base price of 6 .860 Euros (without Iva) except in some options.
The CityCAT's will be put forward at a base price of 9 .460 Euros (without Iva) except in some equipped options. Taxes and subsidized options have not yet been calculated.

This refers to the new air car! that will hopefully hit the markets soon. Thanks in advance :)

-Ethanol is made with sugar. We don’t make sugar real well, so we make corn…which than has to be processed to get out what we need. This adds another step to the process. Every time you add a step you add to the cost. As well as raising the costs in other sectors because the cost of corn goes up, which makes it more expensive to feed cows…you can see where this is going…
-With farmers growing the corn as fast as they can, they are ruining the soil. Which, by the way is replenished with manure from the cows and made with oil
-So, you say, you would rather support the Midwestern farmers than the big fat oil companies…Trust me the little farms are all owned by big, fat companies too.
-Brazil is more than willing to tear down the entire rainforest to make this sugar for us, but now we are tearing down the rainforest that clears the world of much of its carbon gases, which is the original reason that we are making alternative fuels in the first place.
