I came up with an explicit formula of: f(n) = 5*2^(n-1) - 3 as a solution to the recursive sequence: f(n) = 2f(n-1) + 3 for all integers n >= 2 and f(1) = 2. Is there a way to use mathematical induction to verify the "correctness" of my explicit formula?

A new test is developed to test for a certain disease, giving "positive" or "negative" results to indicate that the person does or does not have the disease. For a person who actually has the disease, the test will give a positive result with probability 0.95. For a person who does not have the disease, the test will give a positive result with probability 0.05. Furthermore, only one person in 1000 actually has the disease. If a randomly selected person is given the test and tests positive, what is the probability that the person actually has the disease?

Yn is the position at time n of a particle executing a simple random walk with partially reflecting barriers at 0 and a so that P{Yn = y +1|Yn-1 = y}= p for y = 0, 1, 2, ..,.a-1, and
P(Yn = y-1| Yn-1 = y) = q = 1- p for y 1, 2, .., .a-1, a..
Also P( Yn= a | Yn-1= a) = p and P( Yn= 0 | Yn-1= 0) = q

If П = [П0, П1, П2, . . . . Пa ] is defined to be the stationary distribution for this process

П_i=pП_(i-1)+ qП_(i+1) for i=1,2,….a-1

Show that
П_1= ((p/q)*)П_0 ,П_2=((p/q)^2)*П_0 and in general П_a=((p/q)^a)*П_0

7. Some guy named Jim has come up with a scheme for eliminating coins. This scheme involves probability and the fact that most cash registers today are computers. Suppose that every cash register could be programmed with a random number generator; that is, suppose that it were possible to pick a random number from 1 to 99. Jim's system works as follows. Suppose you purchase items totaling $15.89. The computer would choose a number from 1 to 99 and then compare it with the cents portion of the purchase. In this case, if the random number is between 1 and 89 the price would be rounded up to $16; if it is between 90 and 99 the price would be rounded down to $15. For example, if you purchase a cup of coffee for $1.20, and the random number generator produces a random number from 1 to 20, the price is $2, but if it produces a number from 21 to 99 the price is $1. Use your problem solving skills to make several comments on this scheme.
