A family is driving 600 miles. Assuming they stop to get gas 3 times and eat 2 times, how many hours will it take them to reach their destination? How would you estimate the time?

I just asked a question that proved 0.99999... = 1.

The concept is true, but I thought the math might be an anomale:

x = 0.99999...

so 10x = 9.99999...

then 10x - x = 9x and 9.99999... - 0.99999... = 9

so 9x = 9

and then x = 1

----- ----- ----- ----- ----- -----

But I tried it with 0.33333...

x = 0.33333...

10x = 3.33333...

so 10x - x = 9x and 3.33333... - 0.33333... = 3

so 9x = 3

x = 3/9 or 1/3

1/3 = 0.33333...

The difference would be 0.0000... with zeros going on forever and a one at the end right? Well, where does the one go? At the end of forever??? That's a paradox. There's no end to forever, therefore, there's never any ones. We tried to prove it with math, but you couldn't see the whole picture, so you used rounded numbers which changed the whole equation. Think in terms of infinity.

It really is difficult for the mind to grasp infinity, though, isn't it. Even with one simple number.

1 and 0.99999... are one in the same. Any reasoning used to try to say "the difference is there, it's just ininitely small", is faulty reasoning, as "infinitely small" is by definition, zero.

i'm not too keen on sextants, astrolabes, slide rules, and their ilk, either. an accuracy of +/- 5 feet would be at the very outside of my desired knowledge. i know this might be impossible. rules of thumb are acceptable, but don't go overboard. thanks!
