When I was at school, my Maths teacher showed me a way to decipher the correct moves for the TOH. He wrote out the binary numbers in sequence, and then "read" them. I think it went from right to left? This would show you which moves to make for minimum number. Does anyone know of this technique please?

Find the rule that relates the x and y coordinates in each ordered pair of this set: {(-3,2), (-2,0), (-1,0), (1,6), (2,12),...}. The x coordinate in the set is always the first element in every ordered pair and the y coordinate is always the second element in every ordered pair.
For example, in this set: {(1,3), (2,4), (3,5), (4,6), (5,7),...}, it is clear that the second element can be obtained by adding 2 to the first element so the equation is: x+2=y.

A farmer owned two pieces of land. the first was eight times larger in area then the other, and the two were separated by an access road. When the farmer measured the perimeters of both sections of land, she was surprised to find that it was going to take twice as much fencing to surround the smaller area than it was to surround the larger! Both sections of land were rectangular in shape and the fences were continuous. (the gates should be counted as part of the fence). How much fencing did she need to buy?

Suppose a fair die is rolled 1000 times. Estimate the probability that the number of 6s is between 150 and 180.

I know the expected value is 167, and to get the probability over a range you use that (X-Ex(X))/StDev and use that to obtain the Z-score, subtract, etc. - but what do you use for standard deviation for this problem? I thought it was np(1-p) but that gives me a far higher value than I thought it should.
