Often the clue is in the meaning and use of words. Integer is from the Latin for untouched, whole. It is related to integral (entire) and integrate (make whole). If you integrate the parts of a bicycle you make a whole bicycle (with no parts missing and none left over). If you have nine bicycles, nine is an integer. But if one bike is missing a handle bar or has an extra sprocket, nine is an approximation, and not an integer! If you own nine bikes, nine is a positive integer but if you have sold nine bikes (that have not arrived yet) nine is a negative integer (on your books). Hope that helps a little.
