If the earth is more than 4 bn years old, and its Mantle is at 1000 deg C, then shouldn't we expect the earth -crust (40 km thin) to become equally hot due to conduction of heat (after such a long period of time)? Or is the material of the crust such a bad conductor of heat? If so, then really how bad conductor is it?

This is something that bothers me. If the world was flat, where does all the of the flowing ocean water go? Remember that sometime before, the Greeks and the Europeans believed that the world was flat. I'm just curious, have they not thought of that?

Hi.
I have an earthquake question which would be best answered by a geologist in the community. Members who know the answer that is CORRECT are welcomed!!!
Q1: Do the earthquakes happen randomly or is there a pattern to their locations? Explain your answer.
Q2: State what conclusion you can draw about the pattern of earthquakes and its fit to other global patterns of the Earth's crust. Be very specific and detailed in your conclusion.
Thankyou in advance!

How do scientists know what is inside the earths core. They say, its a hot bowl of lava, but how do they know when they have never been able to go there, because even metal ships or drills melt at that high temperature.

My house is over 100 years old, and we are remodeling. My husband tore up the floor and dug a hole to place a pipe under, and he dug up a hand carved barrel tap. We dont know anything about it, like how old it is or who made it, or if it is worth anything. Does anyone out there know of someone we could contact to find out?

It doesn't seem right since the high silica minerals have lots of strong covalent bonds, and the mafics have some weaker ionic bonding.

This is the title of a presentation my Engineering Geology professor wants me to give. From all the research I have done, I believe that it subduction does build mountains. But, I'm afraid I might be missing something here. Is there some debate going on right now in the geologic community about whether or not this is true? It seems geoLOGICAL to me, ha.
