Yeah, the other answers. Now for the real reason. The chemical reactions in compost heaps are exothermic. This means that when the reaction takes place heat is produced. If heat was required to make a reaction take place it would be termed an endothermic reaction.

Same reason you produce heat in your body. Bacteria in the compost, bacteria in your gut. The chemical reactions they do, produce heat as a by-product.
