My house is over 100 years old, and we are remodeling. My husband tore up the floor and dug a hole to place a pipe under, and he dug up a hand carved barrel tap. We dont know anything about it, like how old it is or who made it, or if it is worth anything. Does anyone out there know of someone we could contact to find out?

I would try to call someone from a nearby university. Find someone in the correct deparment - say archaeology or anthropology. They will probably want to see it, but you may be able to describe it on the phone. Usually, in academics, they will be excited to see it and figure out what the age is and who may have made it. And, they will probably gladly help for no cost at all.

What you found probably has more of a historical value than an archeological value. I would definitely contact whatever local historical society you have (most communities have one) and see if they can answer some of your questions. If not, dont be discouraged, keep probing until you find an answer, it may not be the one youre looking for but at least you will have some peace of mind.
