For eg: ethanoic acid, CH3COOH (a weak acid) is usually paired with CH3COONa (sodium ethanoate/acetate). What is the significance of this pairing? I know the purpose of CH3COONa is to produce CH3COO- ions which will react and hence remove H+ when a little acid is added. I also know when a little base is added, the OH- ions will be removed by CH3COOH. But can I replace CH3COONa with, say, CH3CH2COONa (sodium propanoate)?
