Two options: a)reactions that take place either in acidic or alkaline conditions (e.g. in the presence of H+ or OH- ions). Sometimes you are given a statement like: "balance the following redox equation that takes place in acid conditions". You balance charges by adding H+(or OH-) ions to one side and H2O molecules to the other one.
b)a reaction that has, or results in the formation of, either acidic or alkaline solution.
