I'm not sure if this question belongs in biology, psychology, mysteries of the universe or what, but it is meant as a serious question, so serious answers please.
It concerns something we ALL do at one time or another: flatulate (in layman's terms: fart). And though I can't prove it, I believe it is absolutlely true that while people notice some of their methane may in fact be rank, the perpetrator believes the smell is either actually GOOD (as in my case, or I think so anyway), or at the very least, our own slices of natural cheese do NOT stink as bad as another person's -- even a loved one's. Why is this? There must be a reason.
I can cut a silent fart in a crowded elevator, blame it on someone else if a scene is created, and savor the diffused aftermath for a full minute sometimes. But let someone else do that and I am livid. Their gas really and truly is NASTY -- unlike mine. I am CERTAIN I'm not the only one like this. Truly, I believe everyone is.
But WHY?
