I'm not sure if this question belongs in biology, psychology, mysteries of the universe or what, but it is meant as a serious question, so serious answers please.

It concerns something we ALL do at one time or another: flatulate (in layman's terms: fart). And though I can't prove it, I believe it is absolutlely true that while people notice some of their methane may in fact be rank, the perpetrator believes the smell is either actually GOOD (as in my case, or I think so anyway), or at the very least, our own slices of natural cheese do NOT stink as bad as another person's -- even a loved one's. Why is this? There must be a reason.

I can cut a silent fart in a crowded elevator, blame it on someone else if a scene is created, and savor the diffused aftermath for a full minute sometimes. But let someone else do that and I am livid. Their gas really and truly is NASTY -- unlike mine. I am CERTAIN I'm not the only one like this. Truly, I believe everyone is.

But WHY?

Well I think it has to do with our animal nature. We identify ourselves by smell so our smell is OK to us. Other people have different diets and that can change the smell to be something we don't like.

Very interesting question, factual as well. I am like that too, and i think everybody is. I don't know if it has anything biological to it or not, but in my belief the smell of our own flatulent tells us how healthy we are and how healthy the food we ate is. It works in the subconscious and if the smell is strong and abnormal the first thing we think about is the last thing we ate and associate it with it....
Strange all this, I'd be curious to see what others wrote!

medical..I;m no longer particular yet consider this..maximum persons will for instance drink or eat after relatives or often times even close pals. yet likely no longer after merely absolutely everyone you meet. a unclean mouth is a unclean mouth, authentic. My theory may be there is a few style of psychological block causing this,(both wakeful or in the different case.)This theory would prepare for your question also.

i really don't know. maybe your body has developed a resistance to the smell, after all the fart has been in your body first, maybe there are nerves travelling from your butt to your nose that trick your scent receptors into thinking your fart doesn't smell like something rancid in the summertime.

Never really figgered this one out, but I do know when feeding a puppy a high protein dogfood, avoid closed-in contact with said creature.

I think your witnessing a practice makes perfect scenerario, although I don't want to be the one to test it. I once had a boss who seemmed to hang around activly sniffing whenever anyone farted, perhaps he was well practiced.

That's a great question. I'm sorry I can't answer it, but I just wanted to say... you are absolutely right!

Steve Irwin's next show was going to be about this very topic. Now we'll never know.
