the problem asks: the 1.20 kg head of a hammer has a speed of 8m/s just before it strikes a nail and is brought to rest. Estimate the temperature rise of a 14 g iron nail generated by 10 such hammer blows done in quick succession. Assume the nail absorbs all the energy.

I'm not asking for anyone to solve this problem for me, all i ask for is for someone to explain the steps i need to take in order to find the temperature rise...

thank you for alll of your help!

I know this will sound naive, but shouldn't it be warmer on top of a mountain because it is "closer" to the sun?

I'm guessing it's colder because the air is thinner on higher elevation. So does this mean that heat travels through air? But heat can also travel in outer space, which is a complete vacuum.

I should've paid more attention in my high school science class.

To clarify...How come when the fly is soaring outside in front of my car, it can get hit and crushed by the windshield; but once it's floating inside my car, it can soar in the air without getting hit and crushed by the seats or whatever's inside my vehicle?

I know this is a typical question, but what's the explanation again? Is it because the air, and everything else in the car, is traveling in the same speed as the vehicle?
