I've been going to open mike sessions in the Boston metro-west area and hearing lots of people sing both original songs and covers. Most do a mix of their own music and covers, mostly folk songs.
Some are good, some not so good. Most play guitar, some play other instruments, some sing a cappella.
Anyway, I've been singing for years and have an OK voice and would love to get on the open mike stage once in a while and sing and maybe play a few cords on the guitar. The thing is that I'd also really like to try my hand at writing a song or two.
The lyrics aren't so much a problem as is coming up with an original and interesting tune.
What I'm hoping to find is some web resource(s) that might help with the music writing part. I'm not looking for four years at Berkley School of Music in 15 minutes. Just some good solid pointers on how to get started.
OK, I know there may be no simple answer to doing this, but any pointers would be welcomed.
Thanks.
