that is why studio have monitors to listen accurately to the music. what are you mixing on in the first place, you need a good set of quality monitors to mix on. Mix down to a wave file and if there is too much bass cut some of the low freq with and eq anywhere in the 60 to 250hz range, you will have to experiment. your home theater is going to be hyped to play bass but it should still translate well if your mix is right. try it in a car too, but to be accurate you need some good monitors to mix on and a decent sound treated room.

I had the same problem, but I solved the problem by recording all bass instruments on a separate track. The key is to record any bass with little volume input. Bass waves are so big and pronounced that they always overpower the other instruments, so the secret is to reduce the input volume of any bass instrument before mixing it into your final recording. If you do not have a multi-track recording system, you can down load a good one for free from Audacity.sourceforge.com. Keep your questions coming and I will try to answer them, but don't give up !
Good Luck.

It's likely that your home theater system has a subwoofer that amplifies bass frequencies. One of the differences between analog and digital recording is that you can print a lot more bass on a digital mix. Burn a CD and play it on a car system. That should tell you something about your mixdown technique.
