Why do newsreaders say the years as "twenty twelve" for example, when talking about the Olympics, they do not refer to this year as "twenty O seven", its two thousand and seven, as it should be but the other really bugs me!

I am working on an English paper we have to write a paragraph on something to do with the Holocaust, I choose the Treblinka death camp BUT we also have to start everyother sentence with the next letter of the alphabet, and I have been searching and searching and I am having trouble finding X, Y, and Z words.
