I played for a funeral yesterday, and the husband was crying his eyes out, but I was thinking, what is the word for the husband when the wife dies first? I know women are 'widows' when the husband dies first.

You may have heard this before, but while watching a movie I heard someone say the word "bugger".
One of my friends told me its a curse used in the UK, but couldn't tell me anything else.
And since I am American I have no idea what it is supposed to mean.
Or how bad a curse it is.
Is it as bad as the d-words or the s-words?
Please fill me in.
Thanks for your patience.
