I'm assuming that you mean a word that sounds like the sound it represents (like "boom" or "crash"). If so, the correct spelling is "onomatopoeia."

Do you mean words that sound like what they are when read, or said, aloud i.e crash, thump, squash? Well, I am not sure how to spell it either so I hope someone will.
