i was looking up cruises, and i saw that prices were based per person, double occupancy. what does that mean?

If you go as a single, you will pay a higher rate. It is cheaper for them to have two people to a room, as they use fewer cabins that way. If two couples go as doubles, they use two rooms. If two couples go as singles, they use four cabins. This uses up twice as many rooms for the same amount of people, and they now have two less cabins to offer. Granted, they have four less people to feed and provide clean linens for, but it does not make up for the loss of income on the cabin. So you will pay a premium for single occupancy. It is sometimes as much as one and a half times the rate for double occupancy. (i.e., if you pay $1000 per person double occupancy, it could be $1500 for single occupancy.)
