You may have heard this before, but while watching a movie I heard someone say the word "bugger".
One of my friends told me its a curse used in the UK, but couldn't tell me anything else.
And since I am American I have no idea what it is supposed to mean.
Or how bad a curse it is.
Is it as bad as the d-words or the s-words?
Please fill me in.
Thanks for your patience.

Although it does mean to have anal sex, most people don't use it in this context or expect it to be seen seriously as such. 'You little bugger' usually just means 'you pain in the ****' or 'you cheeky bastard', people generally don't mean to imply that 'you take it up the bum'. I don't know what the 'd' word is (!), but bugger is no way as bad as the 's' or 'f' words. It's often used in a humorous way, and older people i know certainly use the term more than they use other swear words.

Its origin is from "buggery" which is anal sex. However, it is a soft swear-word rarely used outside Britain and would be unacceptable in only the politest of society.

It may be used as an exclamation (Bugger!) when something goes wrong or more vehemently to express disapproval of a naughty child (You little bugger!). It may also be used more endearingly as an expression of sympathy (Poor buggers).

I was told that this was evolved from dirty Bulgar when the occupants of Bulgaria were supposed to indulge in anal sex. In the 19 century Army and navy Buggery was a hanging offence. It is now only a soft swear word in the UK with no popular connection to sodomy.

Yes ! Buggery means anal sex. And a Bugger is a person that performs anal sex. Even though you are an American, I am sure you have heard the expression " Don't Bug me " Guess what that means !

The ORIGINAL meaning of the word was a sodomite, but the present day interpretation has drifted far away from that, as have the meanings & interpretations of many words.

It is now regarded as a low-level swear word, and has no connotations of sodomy.

no I dont think of it as a bad word at all, most people say bugger rather than swearing, i know my grandparents dont swear but ive heard them say bugger many times. its not a rude word, well i dont class it as rude. i find that if you are about to swear but are with the wrong company you would say sugar instead of sh*t, and bugger instead of b*ast*rd.

It means to anally rape someone. If you call someone a "bugger" or a "little bugger", you are saying that they have anal sex with other men. Buggery was a crime in oder times.

You have enough and more of swear words to want to add some more to the stock. Leave it well alone, unless you want to specialise in profanity words.
