RESEARCH PAPER: ALTERNATE ASSIGNMENT (Mrs. Francis)
PROMPT: Using the sources listed below, write a researched paper in which you argue
why Arthur Miller chose to compare the McCarthy hearings to the Salem
Witch Trials in his play, “The Crucible.”
SOURCES: You may use Wikipedia as a “Works Consulted” only, which means you
can read it and use it as a starting point for your knowledge, but you may not
use it directly in your paper or cite it in your “Works Cited” page. You may
only use the following sources:

You may also use the play, “The Crucible.” See Mrs. Francis or Mrs.
Dewey to check out a copy. Also, be sure to cite it!
FORMAT: 4-5 pages in length
MLA style throughout: heading, title, page numbers, font, spacing, etc.
Must contain BOTH in-text citations as well as Works Cited bibliography
with at least five sources
EVALUATION: This essay will be PASS/FAIL. You will be allowed five errors of any
kind—grammar, punctuation, format, etc. If you exceed five
errors in your paper, you will not receive any points. If you have
fewer than five errors and you have written a paper with a clear,
well-argued thesis, then you will receive 350 points. This will
either take the place of a zero grade from your History Day paper
or it will be used as an additional assignment.
Because this essay is PASS/FAIL, you will need to make sure you have plenty of time to check and revise your paper. I will be happy to help you before or after school. You can also email me with questions. There are also resources on Blackboard that you can go to for help with MLA format.
All essays must be submitted to me by MONDAY MAY 21, 2007.
