Well John Wilkes Booth was as famous as brad pit is today.......He was not a confederate but stayed loyal to the south. He thought that if he killed lincoln he would be the greatest hero of all time.......but to answer your ? he was not a confederate soldier!

If he was not a Confederate then he was a definite Confederate sympathizer throughout the war. He believed in the Confederate cause to the point of kidnapping and eventual assassination of Lincoln and part of his cabinet to ensure that this would possibly happened.
