Early AD: Saul, who was apparently a nasty piece of work and known for persecuting christians, was converted on the road to Damascus by seeing a vision of God. Changed his name to Paul and is generally regarded as being the founder of the christian church as we know it today.
Then there's always The Terminator in Terminator 2. He goes from role of hunter to protector. Obviously he's a robot and has been reprogrammed, but that raises interesting questions about choice and free will - and whether you can be conditioned to be good or bad.
Numerous film references could be found - as has been said above its a common theme in fiction. Also the reverse, the loyal and god-fearing Lancelot betraying his king, Arthur, due to lust for his wife is one example.

Nelson Mendola, as far as I am aware, was never "bad" and I cannot find any evidence of his "criminal" life, I believe you are misinformed.
I also believe Duane "Dog" Chapman is a great exaple of someone whom has turned his life around for the better, not only for himself but for many others.

Paul (formerly Saul) in the Christian tradition zealously persecuted the early Christians (and according to the Bible egarly held the coats of those who were stoning Stephen) until he decided to join them and become one of their most enthusiastic and influential supporters.

Lets hear it for St. Augustin, who had to experience sin, so that he knew what he was dealing with, and his abstention from same was thus even more worthy.
