The Poem “Night” is written by Anne Hébert which is a very interesting and touching Poem. Basically, the context of the Poem is that a man is about to die and he is willing to do so. The mood of the poem is definitely very sad but this man feels relieved and calm because he is going to die and he thinks that he will find eternal peace. For instance, when he says, “I close my eyes” it means to me that he is ready to leave the world. I also think that when he says “I decipher no mysteries" it means his time has come and there is nothing strange about that because it is natural.
The speaker in this Poem the author itself, she is talking to herself, she describes in what kind of situation she is in and what she will do. The audience of the Poem, would be the night, the silence and the natural environment.
There are lots of poetic devices in Poem such as similes, metaphors and foreshadowing’s. For instance a simile, when it says “like a lighthouse” it describes the heart sending its beats. Moreover, it also states that at each flash of light he closes his eyes; to put it another way it means that at each heart beat he closes his eyes, this is a personification because it compares human qualities to inanimate objects.
Another example for a poetic device would be Hyperbole, such as when it says “I hear my hear sending its light and dark signals”. This is an over exaggeration which shows intensity of feelings. There is also an example of foreshadowing in the last stanza , when it says “I close my eyes”. In other words gave us an idea that the Poem would come to an end and that the man would slowly die now.
To sum up, the theme of the poem is that sometimes we all fell bad about things that happen, however we should approach it differently. In fact, the best way of dealing with this kind of problems is that we should sit down and talk to someone about the problem.
In brief, this a very sad and dramatic poem where feelings are tossed all over the place. I really liked this poem and I would especially recommend it to other teenagers.
