Immediately before Northern Ireland - all Ireland was a colony of the British Empire and was ruled by the British Parliament. Ireland has always been divided into four Provinces, Ulster (North), Munster (South), Leinster (East) and Connaught (West). The Irish Republicans (the Old IRA - Irish Republican Army) staged a rebellion in 1916 and as a result many of their leaders were executed for doing so. Ireland continued to have problems until in 1922 a Civil War took place. This started a process whereby the British gave the Republicans 26 counties and retained 6 (there are 8 counties in Ulster) in the North. In 1948 Ireland became a republic for the 26 counties. In the early 1960 the present troubles began. 12 years ago the Provisional IRA went on a ceasefire which holds to this day. The matter is not yet solved but may in the near future - how exactly I would not like to speculate but I honestly and fervently hope that it is without a drop of blood being spilt..................
