I worked as a waitress for many years. We recieved a 50% employee discount on food purchased. It had to be on our break. If we came in as a customer on our day off, we had to pay full price. We also had to pay full price if we were ordering food to take out after out shift was over. Only managers recieved free food. It was that way at 99% of the places I worked. Only one restaurant that I worked at had a employee food deduction policy. A certain % of an employee's check was taken out for food purchases. If they ate or not. The policy has since been cancelled. Sometimes wait staff would get a cook to make something for them, and they wouldn't pay. If they were caught, they were termianted. Why do TV shows and movies portray restaraunt service personnel receiving free food? (One Life to Live). I have had many people ask me to bring them food, since I got it for free. Where and why do they get these ideas? Irritating!

I have worked at Carrow's, Denny's, IHOP, El Torito etc.,

I never complain about anything.... and I never really take back anything I have ordered or bought. Today for lunch I decided I wanted something too eat ... and I was craving pizza ( I was sick of turkey already ) So I ordered from the pizza place and now I feel so sick... I only ate 3 peices out of the large and I will have to throw the rest away because I feel horrible since I ate the 3 pieces.. and Im throwing up. SHould I take back the pizza and tell them about it or did I just waste 13.00 on nothing ???

I wanna go out with my date tonight for dessert. I live in the Metropolitan Toronto Area and we've exhausted all 2 dessert specialty places here.

is it weird to go into a restaraunt, sit down and just order from thier dessert menu? Does that piss off you waitstaff out there?

If a customer orders a glass of wine. And she said: "just by the scent from the wine, I know it's a cheap wine, I don't want it." What will you do?

Just out of curiosity, why are bartenders allowed to use their hands to put garnishes in drinks? It seems like a violation of safe food handling that a bartender would take money, then make a drink and add a garnish, all without washing their hands? Is this legal, and if not, why aren't they caught by health inspectors? Are they exempt? Does the alcohol kill any germs that might have been passed to the garnish? Would be interesting to hear from bartenders, restaurant or bar owners, or health inspectors!

What are the best places to work, for young, attractive waitresses? Are they the bars and grilles? Or the high end cocktail bars? I need to make at least 100 per day. Where do you recommend I work?

I asked a question about tipping, and one of the answers was that tipping a server is optional, and the problem is not with bad tippers, but with bad pay practice for restaurants. Do people not understand how much a meal would cost in a nice restaurant if the servers had a decent base pay? There would be no incentive to provide good service, and the payroll at the restaurant would go through the roof. The more servers there are on the dining floor, the better the service will be (in theory). The really good servers who care about customers would demand such a high salary that many small restaurants would not be able to pay them for their services. Add to this the fact that if you receive bad service, it would make no difference to the server, because they are getting paid anyway. The cost of a meal would probably double, if not triple, and only the wealthy would be able to afford a nice meal.
OK, I'll get off my soapbox, but I would like to know what others think about this.

I tried a new sushi restaurant near my house today. I had an order of sushi and a salad. At the end of my meal, the server brought me 2 frozen purple grapes. Is there a specific reason for that?
